High Wheelers homer way past Riders
MARYSVILLE, Calif. — A tough June got tougher for the Glacier Range Riders on Thursday and Friday, with two more Pioneer League losses to Yuba-Sutter by scores of 2-1 and 13-9.
The 13-9 setback came Friday night, thanks to the High Wheelers answering the Range Riders’ three-run eighth inning — Logan Beard hit his third home run of the game, putting Glacier up 9-6 — with seven runs of their own.
The Range Riders have dropped the first four games in this six-game series against the defending league champs and have lost 10 of 11 games thiis month.

Logan Beard’s third home run appeared to put the Range Riders (8-14) in the driver’s seat. Then the High Wheelers (15-7) got a two-run single from Cuba Bess, a sacrifice fly from Connor Denning and a grand slam from Parker Coddou.
That was pretty much it: Kingston Liniak singled with one out in the ninth for Glacier but was stranded.
Beard hit a two-run home run in the first inning, but that 2-0 Glacier lead was erased when Yuba-Sutter put up five runs in the second.
With his team down 6-3, Beard drilled a three-run homer in the fifth to tie the game. His shot in the eighth gave him eight runs batted in, nearly doubling his season output to 18.
The High Wheelers got the bats going against reliever Jason Franks — all four batters he faced reached base — and Cam Cowan. Coddou’s slam, his first homer of the season, came with two out.
Leadoff hitter TJ Clarkson scored on all three Beard home runs. Beard scored four times.

Gio Brusa’s second solo home run of the game broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning, and the Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers took another narrow win from the Range Riders Thursday.
The Range Riders jumped ahead in the first inning on Kingston Liniak’s RBI double — it scored Xavier Casserill, who had singled — and got excellent pitching from Grant Taylor and two relievers.
Glacier outhit the High Wheelers 7-6 but got none over the final three innings. In the eighth Angel Mendoza reached on a fielder’s choice, moved up on Antonio Barranca’s groundout and took third on a wiid pitch, but was stranded.
Taylor went six innings, allowing four hits, two walks and both Yuba-Sutter runs; Brusa’s first homer came in the fourth inning. Taylor struck out eight. Jacob Hasty worked around two walks in the seventh and Nick Zegna threw a perfect eighth inning, striking out two.
Equal to the task was the Wheelers’ Brett Wozniak and three relievers. Wozniak allowed six hits and two walks in five innings, fanning four.
