Bobcats come up short in 2OT against SDSU
BOZEMAN — In a game where every inch mattered, the Montana State Bobcats came up just a few short.
South Dakota State held Julius Davis on fourth-and-1 and the Jackrabbits escaped with a 30-24 win in double overtime Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.
In the first overtime Montana State (0-2) took a 24-17 lead thanks to Adam Jones' 2-yard touchdown run.
The Jackrabbits (2-0) answered in their half of the extra frame with a 2-yard pass from Chase Mason to Jayden Oliver.
South Dakota State then needed one play to take a 30-24 lead in the second overtime: a 25-yard strike to tight end Brayden Delahoyde.
Montana State drove to the SDSU 5-yard line on their possession, but Davis's fourth down run came up short.
The Bobcats forced overtime thanks to a botched punt from South Dakota State’s Max Pelham allowed Montana State’s Seth Brock to score on a 2-yard fumble return.
Justin Lamson gave the Bobcats the lead in the second quarter on a 7-yard rushing touchdown. The Stanford transfer finished with 96 yards on the ground in 20 attempts. He added 123 yards through the air on 18-of-28 passing.
Davis tacked on 76 yards rushing as the Bobcats carried for 210 yards. Adam Jones had 30 yards and a touchdown.
Mason finished with 190 yards and three touchdowns for South Dakota State. Two of his scores coming in the extra frames.
Lofton O’Groske led the Jackrabbit receivers with 139 yards receiving on 11 catches.
South Dakota State ran the ball 40 times for 107 yards.
Montana State returns home Saturday to play San Diego out of the Pioneer Football League.
