Murray is medalist, Pack sweeps Butte golf titles
FAIRMONT HOT SPRINGS — Torren Murray cruised to medalist honors and a quartet of Glacier girls ended up in the top 10 as the Wolfpack swept the team titles at the Butte Invitational golf meet Friday.
Tougher pin placements led to some higher boys scores on the second day, but the setup at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort didn’t seem to bother the Glacier girls.
Abbi Townsend and Vaida Cole both shot 88 — only CMR’s Quincy Weymouth was better Friday, shooting 86 — to surge into to ninth and 10th. Meanwhile Kendall Tkachyk and Maggie Mitton tied for third at 178, four strokes off the lead, and the Pack won the girls team title by 50 strokes over CMR.
Dillon’s Skylar LaPierre and Belgrade’s Lilia Troxel both shot 174; LaPierre was named medalist via scorecard playoff.
Murray needed no tiebreaker, shooting the best score, 73, for the second straight day. His total of 3-under 141 was nine strokes ahead of Helena Capital’s Jayce Belzer and Jackson Hageman of Great Falls CMR.
“The boys and girls both played great,” Glacier coach Jim Ness said. “I’m really proud of how the girls played. The boys captured their second title of the year and Torren Murray got his first win after a few second-place finishes.”
The Wolfpack’s Jonah Wynne shot a 75 Friday to surge to sixth individually, and teammates Luke Nelson and Sav Syverson were among five players to finish in a tie for 10th at 160.
Flathead’s boys switched spots with Helena Capital, falling to sixth in the team standings. Trygve Gislason ended up seventh individually for the Braves, at 157.
The Bravettes ended up sixth out of eight full teams that competed. Rebecca Schmidt was their top individual, shooting bookend 101s and finishing 14th.
Next up for Flathead and Glacier is the Western AA Divisional next Thursday and Friday.
“We are hosting divisionals on our home course (Northern Pines),” Ness said. “It’s postseason and it’s what we prepare for all year. We are ready and looking forward to next week.”
