Glacier's Ada Thiels wins Butte cross country; Flathead boys 3rd

BUTTE — Thursday brought 14 of Class AA’s16 schools to the Mining City for the Butte Invitational cross country meet, and some Glacier and Flathead runners stood out.

Glacier freshman Ada Thiel won the girls individual title, completing the 5,000-meter course at Highland View Golf Course in 18 minutes, 51 seconds. 

Bozeman’s Tula Higman was second in 18:54.1; Flathead sophomore Everett Holland was third in 19:12.4. 

Glacier, with No. 1 runner Lauren Bissen taking on a pacer’s role — she and teammate CaitrynVander Vloedt were 28-29 — was fifth in the team standings behind Gallatin, Helena High, Bilings West and Missoula Big Sky. Flathead was eighth. 

Flathead’s top finisher after Holland was sophomore Emery Eash in 24th. 

Flathead’s boys had a nice group behind sophomore Carson Thorne, who was 11th in 16:38.7; juniors Brodyn DeShaw and Chris Holland and senior Ryker Zuffelato finished 18-20-21. The Braves finished third as a team with 119 points; Helena (70) and Missoula Hellgate (93) went 1-2. 

Glacier’s varsity boys, fighting some illnesses, didn’t compete Thursday.
