On Thursday the Glacier girls had the 1-2 punch.
With Maggie Mitton shooting the day’s low score and Kendall Tkachyk one shot behind, the Wolfpack forged a 22-stroke lead after the first round of the Western AA Divisional golf tournament at Northern Pines Golf Course.
Glacier’s Luke Nelson likewise has a one-stroke lead on the boys’ field after 18 holes; the Pack sits second as a team, six strokes behind a Missoula Sentinel squad that has four boys in the top nine.
Four Glacier girls are in the top 10 in the event, which concludes Friday at Northern Pines: Abbi Townsend (90) and Vaida Cole (94) give the Pack a 359 total; Helena is second at 381, and Missoula Big Sky is third at 406.
Flathead, with Rebecca Schmidt sitting 15th, is sixth in the girls team standings.
The Sentinel boys shot even par 288 as a team Thursday, led by Hudson Goroski’s 3-under 69. Goroski is tied with Helena’s Austin Kaufman, one shot behind Nelson.
Jack Schaefer of Sentinel is at 70, and the Spartans got nice rounds from Derek Schaefer (74) and Willy Nowlen (75) as well.
Nelson, who made four birdies and shot a 33 on the back nine Thursday, was joined in the top 15 by Glacier teammates Torren Murray (71, tied for fifth), Jonah Wynn (76) and Sam Syverson (79).
Glacier came in at 294 strokes; Helena Capital is third at 318.
Flathead’s boys are fifth at 332, and two Braves are in the top 15 after 18 holes: Andrew Converse fired a 77 and Trygve Gislason, a 79.
