Agnes Fetveit Bjorneby, 91

Agnes Fetveit Bjorneby, 91, died Nov. 18, 2004, in Yakima, Wash.

She was born April 9,1913, on her parents' homestead in McKenzie County, North Dakota. Her father and mother, Sveinung "Sam" and Guri Storbraaten Fetveit, were immigrants from Norway. She attended a country school near the farm and graduated from Watford City High School.

Agnes attended Dickinson State College for a year and then began teaching in the same country school she had attended. She later attended Eastern Montana College, the University of Montana and the University of Washington.

In 1935, her family moved to the Flathead Valley, where Agnes taught at Marion. She later taught at other rural and city schools, last at Edgerton School. During World War II, she worked for Boeing in Seattle. Agnes was a summer employee in Yellowstone National Park.

In 1950, she married Laurence "Larry" Bjorneby in Kalispell. They owned Bjorneby Jewelry, managed by Agnes after her husband was elected mayor of Kalispell. In 1957, their son, Ladd, was born. They retired in 1975 and Laurence died in 1979.

She was active in various ministries at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kalispell, among which were teaching Sunday school, serving as a leader in the women's group and singing in the choir.

Agnes' hobbies were drawing and painting, knitting and hand-weaving, pinochle and bridge. She was active in Republican Women. She also served in leadership with the Community Concert Association. Agnes traveled to Norway twice.

In September 2003, she moved to Yakima to be near her son, and granddaughters.

She is survived by her son, Ladd; granddaughters, Amy and Alison Bjorneby; several nephews and nieces including Ron, Steven and Gary Fetveit and their families; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Fetveit, all of Kalispell; and dear friend, Charlotte Ebeltoft, also of Kalispell.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, Margit Fetveit; and brothers, Olav and Martin Fetveit.

The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Frederick William "Freddie" Hartman Jr., 67

Frederick William "Freddie" Hartman Jr., 67, passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 2004, at his home in Martin City surrounded by his loving family.

He was born June 18, 1937, in Saginaw, Mich., to Frederick William Hartman Sr. and Orra Mae (Heil) Hartman. He was raised in Midland, Mich., and moved to his parents' cherry orchard on the East Lake Shore of Flathead Lake in 1976. In 1989, he moved to Martin City, to live with his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jane and Tom Church.

As a boy he was active in Boy Scouts, bowling, and loved working in his parents' orchard picking cherries and apples. Freddie loved the outdoors, and could often be seen at sporting events. Freddie's biggest joy was meeting people and shaking their hand. He worked for Flathead Industries in Columbia Falls with his brother, Richard, for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mae Hartman; and his brother-in-law, Tom Church.

Freddie is survived by his sister, Mary Jane Church; his brother and best friend, Richard Hartman; his nephew, Louie Church; and his nieces, Carma Johnson and Cathy Nash, and their families.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and was an inspiration to us all.

Freddie's memorial service will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Canyon Community Church in Coram. There will be a potluck dinner at 5 p.m. in the Ed building next to the church preceding the service.
