Reading Buddies needed

The Lakeside Reading Buddy program is looking for more volunteer mentors as it finishes a successful semester and looks forward to a new one.

During fall 2004, the mentoring program had more than 50 adults working with Lakeside elementary students as reading buddies and classroom helpers. It brought academic benefits and made the school a center for community fellowship and involvement.

Reading Buddies combines mentors with students to create a fun and supportive learning environment that improves student self-confidence and reading skills.

Mentors spend time either talking and reading with individual children or doing reading-based activities with an entire class.

The program has served hundreds of kindergarten through fifth-grade students over the past five years.
