Troy Marine killed in Iraq

A Troy Marine was killed in Iraq on Thursday.

Marine Cpl. Raleigh C. Smith, 21, died in Iraq's Al Anbar Province along with two other Marines as a result of enemy action.

Smith was a member of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., the U.S. Department of Defense said in a written statement on Monday.

His mother, Gail Smith, lives in Troy. His brother, Ramsey, also a Marine, is said to be stationed in Iraq. His father is Raymond Smith.

Department press officers did not immediately return phone calls.

Other soldiers killed in Iraq with Montana ties include: Army 1st Lt. Edward Matthew Saltz of Bigfork; Marine Lance Cpl. Kane Funke, who attended high school in Kalispell; Marine Lance Cpl. Nathan Raymond Wood, born in Great Falls; Army Staff Sgt. Aaron N. Holleyman, who graduated from high school in Glasgow; Marine Cpl. Dean Pratt of Stevensville and Army Pfc. Owen Witt of Sand Springs.

Funeral arrangements with Nelson and Vial Funeral Home in Libby are scheduled for early January.
