Family film celebrates miracles of life

| November 4, 2004 1:00 AM

The Whitefish Theatre Company presents the enchanting and magical drama "The Story of the Weeping Camel" at the O'Shaughnessy Saturday and Sunday, with shows at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. both days.

The film follows the adventures of a family of herders in Mongolia who face a crisis when a mother camel refuses to nurse her baby after a particularly difficult birth.

Without nourishment the little camel will die so, according to ritual, a musician is summoned who can perform a ceremony that is meant to coax the mother back to her baby.

Apart from reuniting mother and child, the "cure" has a miraculous side effect of causing the camel to weep.

This wonderful film explores a distant and exotic culture while celebrating family unity (both human and animal) and the understated miracle of daily life. Richard Schickel of Time Magazine called the film "a truly beautiful film the whole family can embrace."

The film is rated PG.

Tickets are sold at the door only for $7 for adults and $5 for students.
