Just Us Girls offers two shows full of music and fun

| November 4, 2004 1:00 AM

Just Us Girls presents "Girls Will Be Girls," an eclectic entertainment event that promises all the music, dancing, fun and flash that audiences have come to expect from the group's autumn shows.

"Girls Will Be Girls" will be at the O'Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish on Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and again at the Flathead High School Auditorium in Kalispell on Nov. 14 at 3 p.m.

Just Us Girls is four lathead Valley women, with Carlene McCrea at the piano and Sally Murdock, first soprano; Suzie Wambeke, second soprano; and Marcia Siblerud, alto.

The group presents a style reminiscent of famous women's trios of decades past, with a contemporary edge.

Joining Just Us Girls for "Girls Will Be Girls" are several of their favorite male musicians: Brad Seaman, baritone; Paul Faessel, string bass; Jack Waller, drums; and Marc Moriva, sax and clarinet.

"Girls Will Be Girls" starts out with a three-song costumed and choreographed set whose top-secret theme will remain a surprise until the show. Following that is a "Funny Girls" set that features humorous solos especially chosen by each of the vocalists. Closing the first half is a vocal vignette of "Guy-less Girls" bemoaning their lack of dates on a Saturday night.

The second half of the show features "Jazz Girls," in which the guys will join them for an array of jazz standards including the familiar tunes "Pennies from Heaven," "Lullaby of Birdland," "Old Devil Moon," and "Hit that Jive Jack." The band will present McCrea's arrangement of the poignant jazz classic, "Everything Must Change."

Just Us Girls recorded its first CD this summer. "Once in Awhile" is a collection of lively uptempo jazz standards and full-bodied ballads that resonate with the sounds of the 1930s and '40s. They will be available at the November shows for $15.

All seats are $12 and are general admission. Tickets are available at Bookworks in Whitefish, Books West in Kalispell, and Glacier Wallflower in Columbia Falls. Tickets will also be sold at the door if not sold out in advance.
