Snow closes Camas Road in park

| November 24, 2004 1:00 AM

Snow has led to the closure of Camas Road between Fish Creek and the Camas Creek entrance in Glacier National Park.

"The recent snowfall was only a few inches, but we will no longer maintain the Camas Road for public motorized use this fall," Park Superintendent Mick Holm said.

Holm added, "If the snow melts off and road conditions permit, the Camas Road may reopen for through vehicle traffic."

Going-to-the-Sun Road is open from West Glacier to Avalanche on the west side and to St. Mary Campground on the east side. The Kintla Lake Road and the Inside North Fork Road (from Polebridge to Logging Creek) remain open for vehicles.

Due to snow and/or hazardous conditions, all other park roads are currently closed to vehicle use, including the Bowman Lake, Cut Bank, Many Glacier, Inside North Fork (Fish Creek to Logging Creek) and Two Medicine roads.

If the snow and ice melt, these roads could reopen for vehicles. Otherwise the roads are open for recreational use such as hiking, skiing and snowshoeing.

Park visitors are reminded that when roads are closed to vehicles and used as trails, pets are not permitted.

Updates on road status are posted on the park's Web site (www.nps.gov/glac/whatsnew/recupd.htm) and

are also available by calling park headquarters at 406-888-7800.
