Law Roundup

| October 4, 2004 1:00 AM

A Ferndale resident, having noticed a bear and two cubs in the area as well as bear droppings in the yard, told Flathead County Sheriff's deputies he has a shrewd suspicion about what happened to a missing dog.

As they arrived at a party in the 300 block of Haskill Basin Road, Flathead County sheriff's deputies and a Montana Highway Patrol officer noticed a car driving away from the party - and then into a ditch. The 18-year-old driver was charged with DUI. Most of the underage partygoers scattered when officers arrived, but two 17-year-olds and one 19-year-old were cited for underage drinking.

A deputy went to Wal-Mart and arrested a 41-year-old man described as a "violent drunk," charging him with disorderly conduct and trespassing.

Two pickups, one white, one red, have reportedly been shining lights and shooting every night - possibly poaching - in the 7200 block of Farm to Market Road. A Ferndale resident, having noticed a bear and two cubs in the area as well as bear droppings in the yard, has a shrewd suspicion about what happened to a missing dog.

A landlord reported that his tenant assaulted him in the 5800 block of U.S. 93. A woman who looked at an apartment with her daughter probably will keep looking, since the would-be landlord allegedly made some lewd suggestions.

A man received a harsh lesson about the kindness of strangers, according to a report at the Kalispell Police Department. He bought some camping gear in Columbia Falls and accepted a ride to his Kalispell hotel from a person driving a white pickup with Texas plates. For some reason, he left his purchases in the truck. The driver promised to return in an hour, but instead returned the gear to the store and made off with the cash.

Two people were said to have been caught on camera shoplifting at Kalispell Center Mall. A man was jailed after being caught using a hotel room on East Idaho Street for which he had not paid.

Four boys who reportedly were breaking windows in the 500 block of Fifth Avenue East also hit a woman who confronted them.

A woman was arrested for DUI following a traffic stop on West Idaho. In the 600 block of South Main Street, a 19-year-old was caught with alcohol he's too young to have. Police also went to the 700 block of East California Street when a teenage girl kicked in a door there.

An employee at a gas station on West Idaho called police because of a suspicion that a young man had a six-pack of beer hidden down his pants. That call proved to be unfounded.

She didn't want to file a complaint or speak to an officer, but a woman on Eighth Street West told police that the FBI had stolen her identity and had entered her house and taken her wallet.

Columbia Falls police arrested a 41-year-old man for DUI after a traffic stop at the intersection of U.S. 2 and Larch Drive.

A boy was charged with shoplifting from a business on Ninth Street.

Whitefish police arrested a 31-year-old woman for DUI following a traffic stop on U.S. 93 South. A few hours later, three teenage boys - ages 17, 16 and 14 - were charged with being minors in possession of alcohol along the same stretch of road.

Alarms

Several agencies - including Bad Rock Fire Department, Three Rivers EMS, Columbia Falls Fire Department, the Flathead County Sheriff's Office and the Montana Highway Patrol - sent responders to the 3300 block of Columbia Falls Stage Road when a vehicle hit a utility pole there. There was no one in the car when they arrived, but the Whitefish Police Department notified them that a young man had arrived at North Valley Hospital with severe injuries sustained in a car wreck. However, that man's injuries were apparently sustained in a different accident, a truck rollover on Beaver Lake Road west of Whitefish.

The Hungry Horse Fire Department and the Montana Highway Patrol were among those responding to the 8800 block of U.S. 2 when a girl was knocked unconscious by a car. She was taken by ambulance to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, and reports note that she complained of an aching neck and head.

The Kalispell Fire Department took three calls, all of them medical.
