Bravettes slide on last day of AA golf

BUTTE - Day 2 at the Class AA state golf tournament proved to be a downer for the Flathead High School girls golf team.
The Bravettes, sitting third after Monday's session, slipped back to sixth place in the team standings while Tess Stevenson, who was pushing defending state champ Darah Newell of Helena High after the first 18, wound up third.
The Flathead boys, 10th after the opening day, managed to climb one spot to place ninth.
Stevenson, just three shots behind Newell after play at the Old Works Golf Course, closed with an 88 for a 168 total. That left her 18 shots behind Newell, who posted a winning 150 total.
Newell, who opened with a 77, closed with a 73 at the Butte Country Club.
Erin Metzger of Bozeman posted a pair of 81s to place second with a 162 score.
Bozeman claimed team title honors, 726, with Helena second, 729. Flathead's total was 803.
Josh Hedge led Billings West to the boys team title, 587. Bozeman finished second, 617.
Flathead shot 643.
The Braves were led by Ian Toth, 82-75-157. He topped FHS both days.
Taylor also shot an 82 for FHS on Monday. He followed that with a 78 for a 160 total, second best on the squad.
