Flathead's Brown, Welder cruise to individual titles
Good, but not outstanding.
That's how Flathead coach Paul Jorgensen summed up the performances of his runners at the Flathead B Meet Friday at the Glacier View Cross Country Course at Kidsport.
"It's pretty difficult to get up for a meet like this where we don't have a lot of teams here," said Jorgensen.
"I thought our girls ran pretty good, but not outstanding."
Joining Flathead at this year's event were Eureka, Cut Bank and Two Eagle River.
No team totals were kept.
Flathead did have both individual winners - Carly Brown, 18:50, for the girls and Elliot Welder, 16:21, for the boys.
Senior standout Zoe Nelson, 17:41, ran with the boys and finished 13th overall.
"That was nice for her to win that race," said Jorgensen of Brown.
"Any time you break 19 minutes on that course, it's pretty good. Of course Zoe breaking 18 minutes is even better."
Jorgensen had two more runners dip under 20 minutes on the girls side - Chelsea Burfeind, 19:13, and Shannon Ross, 19:26 - which pleased the coach.
Burfeind was second and Ross third.
Flathead's John Fairweather, 16:46, and Seth Grossman, 16:59, both improved their times on this course by 17 seconds from last month and finished second and fourth, respectively.
That gave the Braves three runners under 17 minutes.
"I thought he ran pretty well," said Jorgensen of Welder, "faster than he ran at the invitational (last month) by 13 seconds."
Eureka was led by Theron Truman, third in 16:46.8, and Emmy Bentley, fourth in 19:46.
This was the final outing of the regular season for all four schools.
The next competition is the state meet Oct. 23 in Helena.
