Kalispell police are looking for a man who stabbed a teenager in the back Monday evening.

The girl was treated for a "fairly substantial injury" that wasn't life-threatening, according to Kalispell Police Detective Jim Brenden.

He said the 19-year-old woman was walking up an exterior stairway at about 9 p.m. to visit a friend in an apartment complex at 1435 Third Avenue East.

She encountered a man in his 20s and said hello to him, Brenden said.

"He didn't respond verbally" but tried to grab her, Brenden said. She turned to run and "felt like she was punched in the back." She ran across the parking lot and got away while the man fled.

"Then she realized she'd been stabbed," Brenden said.

Tenants had called police when the woman screamed.

Kalispell Fire Department's ambulance took her to Kalispell Regional Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

She described her attacker as about 6 feet tall, weighing 175 to 200 pounds, and wearing dark clothing.

Anyone with information on the incident should call police at 758-7780.
