Whitefish boys in command

Denning and Hughes lead the Flatfish Invitational after one round Monday.
Darah Newell Helena High shot a 76 and Whitefish's Derek Denning and Spencer Hughes each had a 66 to lead the Flatfish Invitational after one round Monday.
Helena Capital leads the girls team competition, five strokes ahead of Whitefish.
For the boys, Whitefish was running away with the competition. At 278, the Bulldogs are 32 shots ahead of second place - their own JV team. Missoula Sentinel was another 12 strokes behind them in third.
"I think the scores were good because the weather was fabulous," Flathead coach Alice Ritzman said. "It was nice for the kids to be able to play in shirt sleeves instead of everything they owned."
Newell has a five-stroke advantage over Flathead's Tess Stevenson and eight strokes over Maresa Jenson of Whitefish. The girls competed at Buffalo Hill Golf Club.
"The story is kind of the same as it's been all year," Ritzman said. "Darah Newell has won every tournament she's played in this year."
Denning and Hughes are five shots better than teammate Sam Krause, who carded a 71.
Play concludes today with the boys playing at Buffalo Hill and the girls at Whitefish Lake. The first groups are scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m.
