Irwin cleans up in Compacts

The Compact 50 was the featured event last Saturday at Montana Raceway Park and it turned out to be a survivor event as well.

After smooth sailing for 30 some laps, racing mayham finally took place on lap 34 with a crash sending five cars to the pits - Colton Larson, Pat Norris, Levi Walters, Dwayne Tedrick and Adam Kinkle.

A couple laps later, more troubles on the track, leaving only eight cars in the hunt for the title.

Tyler Irwin managed to avoid the trouble and that allowed him to take the checkered flag for the victory. Gene Streitz finished second and Tim Davis third.

This was Irwin's final race of the season before heading back to college and continuing his racing career in the Midwest. And he was dominant from start to finish.

Irwin set the fast time with a 15:31-second lap and also won the A Heat.

Norris and Mark West took the wins in the Trophy dashes. Norris also won the B Heat.

Heading into the final weeks of the season, Davis leads the Compact standings with 380 points. Streitz is second, 375, and the Irwin brothers are third, 365.

In the Limited Sportsman Division, Jason Robinson took his first main win of the season after setting track records twice this year. Robinson beat defending champion Dirk Lybeck, who set the fast time for the night, 14:37.

Lybeck leads the division with 366 points. Cory Wolfe is second, 337, and Robinson third, 331.

John Hillicker and Jake Grosswiler were main event winners in the Bandoleros and Legends classes.

The top three Legends points leaders are Alex Lessor 460, Grosswiler 455 and Chad Roth 415.

It was also Veterans Night at the races last Saturday, where all veterans were admitted free. Race fans also helped out by raising over 1,390 pounds of food for the Veterans Food Bank in the Flathead Valley.

This Saturday it's August Revolution with the Canadian Super Trucks and the Northwest Modifieds rolling into town. Also racing are the Flathead Legends.
