Black opens fair horse racing with two victories

Jockey Nikeela Black was aboard two winners Friday as Northwest Montana Fair horse racing opened its five-day run at the Flathead County Fairgrounds.,

Black rode Andys My Dash to victory in the second race, a quarter horse futurity event for the Charlie Russell finals next weekend, and Dash Yawl in the fifth race, a mixed allowance race.

Eight races were scheduled, but only seven held. The fourth race, the third one in the futurity qualifying for the Charlie Russell finals, did not take place because of a gate malfunction.

So, there were only two trials held instead of three.

"We're not sure what we'll do with that," said racing secretary Shorty Martin.

The top eight horses from the three futurity races were to advance to the finals.

Other than that, Martin said "it was a normal race day."

The betting handle totaled $26,553. Last year $25,309 was bet on eight races for the opener.

Racing continues today with a prep race for the Charlie Russell Derby. Post time is 1 p.m.
