Eugene Huso, 86

Eugene Huso, 86, of Hermiston, Ore., died Thursday, Aug. 18, 2005, at the Mid-Columbia Medical Center in The Dalles, Ore. Eugene was born July 11, 1919, in Crosby, N.D., to Knute and Lulabelle Butler Huso.

Eugene graduated from Flathead County High School. After high school, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a cargo pilot, and earned the rank of first lieutenant.

In 1952, he married Helen Cross from Lakeside.

The family moved to Mesa, Ariz., where Eugene was a crop duster. From there, they moved to Grants Pass, Ore., and went into the logging industry.

From there, he became an iron worker and worked on several of the Northwest dams. He was a member of the Northwest Iron Workers Union.

Eugene was a member of the Eagles, VFW and Elks.

He enjoyed fishing, golf, woodworking and especially bingo and jazz.

Eugene is survived by his three daughters, Cheryl Sykes of Spokane, and Michelle Dyer and Lori Kalal, both of Hermiston; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; sisters, Delores Young of Bigfork, and Carol Whelpley of Apple Valley, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Eugene was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1987; two daughters, Monica Lu Huso in 1978, and Marla Sue Dyer in 1989, his parents; and brother, Ken Huso.

Graveside funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today, Aug. 23, at the Hermiston Cemetery, with military honors by VFW Desert Post No. 4750.
