Flathead bands celebrate season

| December 2, 2005 1:00 AM

The Flathead High School bands will be presenting their annual holiday concert on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

The percussion class will perform a mallet ensemble arrangement of a chorale by Decius. They are performing a body percussion piece, "Bossa Nova Without Instruments," by William Schinstein. As the title suggests, the entire work is performed without formal instruments.

The concert bands will be combined to perform on this concert. Their selections include "Spartenburg Overture," an overture by Barry Kopetz. The group will be performing "Life on the Arkansas" written by Walter Cummings. The piece offers a cultural overview of the Southeast Colorado river. The band will also be performing selections from the "Nutcracker Suite."

The symphonic band will begin their part of the program with the "Eternal Father, Strong to Save" written by American composer Claude T. Smith. This spirited work is based on the Navy hymn.

The classic band work "Four Scottish Dances," by Malcolm Arnold, will also be performed. Set in four movements, the music brings the folk music of Scotland to life.

The band will close the concert with "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson.

Following the concert the band parents organization is hosting a pie social in the cafeteria. Although there is no charge for the pie and coffee, donations will be accepted. Music for the pie social will be provided by the Flathead High School Jazz Band.

There is no charge for the concert or pie social.
