FHS swimmers steal show

Bravettes, Braves capture team titles in season opener

Flathead's swimmers dominated their own seven-team invitational on Saturday at The Summit.

The Bravettes, led by double individual event winners Jacey Stahlberg and Jenna Thiel, breezed to an easy victory with 366 team points. Havre was second with 197.

Brian Brady was a double winner for the Braves, who finished the day with 239 points. C.M. Russell was second, 206 1/2.

All total, the FHS girls won seven of the 11 events held and the FHS boys four.

Thiel's firsts came in the 100 IM (1:06.91)) and 50 breaststroke (33.59) while Stahlberg picked up firsts in the 100 freestyle (58.87) and 50 butterfly (29.62).

Jessa Thiel won the 50 freestyle (26.25).

Flathead's other two firsts came in the relays - 200 and 400 freestyle. Swimming on both were Stahlberg, the two Thiels and Elizabeth Myers.

Andrew Unterreiner, 100 IM (1:06.34), and Taylor Streit, 50 backstroke (32.24), had the other firsts for the FHS boys.

"Brian Brady was real impressive for the first meet of the year," said FHS coach Paul Stelter.

"That's almost his best time in the 100 freestyle."

Stelter said the Thiels also started the season off on a strong note.

"They were real impressive in their races," he said.

"Jessa was also second in the 100 free."

Myers also added a second place finish in the 50 freestyle.

Freshman Sammie Hammett captured two thirds in the 100 IM and 50 backstroke.

Streit added a third in the 100 IM and Bryce Fischer placed third in the 100 freestyle.

The FHS boys best showing in the relays was a runner-up finish in the 200 and 400 freestyle events.

"For the first meet of the year, they were still a little rusty," said Stelter overall of his swimmers.

"But they swam with a lot of heart.

"We always look like this the first meet of the year," he added.

"Every team that has been a state championship for us has started out the year like this."
