Flathead acting class play a parable of individuality

The Flathead High School Theatre Department will present "He Who Says Yes. He Who Says No." on Monday and Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the David M. Hashley Theatre.

The production will be presented by the FHS Acting 5 class.

"In his play 'He Who Says Yes. He Who Says No.' Bertolt Brecht uses the Japanese No Play 'Taniko' as his inspiration," said Greg Adkins, director and class advisor. "He tells a dramatic parable that questions the extent to which an individual should submerge himself and his private feelings in the interest of benefiting the common cause."

Brecht, a German poet, playwright and theatrical reformer, is one of the most prominent figures in the 20th-century theatre. Brecht's works encourage audiences to think rather than become too involved in the story and the characters.

This short play will be presented as Act 1. After a 10-minute intermission, the class will perform a Monologue Showcase as Act 2.

In Acting 5 "Career Prep and Acting Styles" students approach theatre as an art form and as a profession. They create a portfolio, a resume and letters of inquiry as well as participate in auditions and interviews.

"Acting 5 is a career prep class," said Adkins. "These students are considering studying theatre beyond the high school level."

Actors in the production include: Laramy Applekamp, Marilyn Bennett, Ashley Danno, Brian Davenport, Adam Finch, Miles Fortenberry, Sarah Harball, Sarah Hinkle, Sarah Holloway, Josh Kelly, Jake Larsen, Emmalee McLellan, Mara Mercer, Madison Monroe, Nicole Slye, Tabitha Spencer and Kelsi Steele.

Technicians for the show include Natasha Eickert, Jamie Jacobson, Krystie Kasperson and Laura Kleist.

Tickets are available at the high school's main office and at Herberger's. Cost is $7 for adults and $5 for students, children and senior citizens. Seating is limited, so people are encouraged to get tickets early.
