Lake County opens garbage transfer station

| February 11, 2005 1:00 AM

Lake County's garbage transfer station at 113 N. Reservoir Rd. will open to the general public on Monday, Feb. 14.

The transfer station will be open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week except for legal holidays. The transfer station has been processing almost all the county's garbage for more than a month, sending nearly 1,500 tons of garbage to the BFI landfill in Missoula.

All vehicles entering the transfer station property must stop at the scale house.

With the opening of the transfer station, the current landfill on Kerr Dam Road will have new hours. The landfill will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. except for holidays. The landfill will accept only construction and demolition debris, large metal items and appliances, plus grass, leaves or other compost materials.

The landfill will operate only until its final closure elevation is reached; then it will be closed.

The landfill on North Reservoir Road (commonly called the wood pit) will now be reached via the scales at the transfer station and continue to accept concrete, rocks, stumps and clean, untreated wood.

The seven container sites near Ravalli, Charlo, Elmo, Proctor, Woods Bay, Ferndale and Swan Lake will continue to operate as they have previously.

The transfer station will continue recycling items such as oil and car batteries and will also begin to recycle cardboard and newspapers. There will also be bins for metal and compost materials that the county will transport to the landfill for further processing.

The transfer station and solid waste office may be reached at 883-7323. The landfill's phone number will remain 883-5412.
