Flathead High School presents gripping drama

| January 7, 2005 1:00 AM

The Flathead High School Theatre Department's Acting II class will present the compelling drama "Flowers for Algernon" January 10 and 12 at 7 p.m. in the David M. Hashley Theatre.

Based on the novel by Daniel Keyes, and adapted for stage by David Rodgers, "Flowers for Algernon" is the story of Charlie Gordon, a developmentally disabled man who is the subject of experimental brain surgery to heighten his intelligence. The operation has previously been performed only on a mouse named Algernon. The operation is a success.

Charlie's intelligence soars to genius levels, and he finally achieves his dream of being "smart." But nothing can prepare him for the shock of seeing the world as it really is.

"Charlie is a man in search of himself," said director Greg Adkins. "In this play Charlie discovers his past, his present and his bleak future."

A gripping and intense drama, this version of "Flowers for Algernon" explores the interweaving relationships of humanity and technology as well as the kindness humans show to the world around them.

"'Flowers for Algernon' is poignant, funny and tragic, but with a hope for the indomitable spirit of man," said Adkins. "It is a play that is well written, theatrical and with a message that we will long remember."

The realistic acting utilizes the minimal set pieces and props and the monochromatic style of the show.

"All those who treat Charlie without respect are costumed in black, white and shades of grey," said Adkins. "Love and kindness are represented in vivid color."

Acting II "Process and Performance" is one of 11 courses offered through the theater department at Flathead High School and gives students the opportunity to develop their character portrayal skills while continuing to develop discipline.

The cast includes Zeb Matteson, Miles Fortenberry, Alex Cox, Laramy Applekamp, Brittney Erie, AJ Noe, Alyssa Hadley, Marilyn Bennett, Ben Jacobson, Ashley Robinson, Melissa Lake, Kelsi Steele, Sean Sullivan, Peter Rasmussen, Madison Monroe, Chelsie Steller, Hannah Evans, Shane Hermes, Ken Grinde, Chelsea Overton, Eli Smith, Nicole Slye, Allison Eudy and Josh Burriesci-Kelly is Charlie Gordon.

Behind the scenes, Madison Monroe, Holly White, Eric Fulton, Brandon Shirtliff, Evan Tice, Ashley Danno, Bridget Kelly, Tiffany Zellmer, Chelsea Eickert, Scotty Davis and Adam Finch make up the stage, lighting and sound crew.
