Whitefish's Black Curtain goes up on 'Proof'

| January 14, 2005 1:00 AM

The Whitefish Theatre Company announces two evenings of live theatre with its Black Curtain production of "Proof" by David Auburn. Jan. 21-22 at 8 p.m. at the O'Shaughnessy Center.

These productions are staged readings, done by actors on a bare stage with minimum props and costumes.

"Proof," winner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Awards, is a smart and compassionate play that combines the elements of mystery and surprise with old-fashioned storytelling to provide a compelling evening of theatre.

On the eve of her 25th birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician.

Now, following his death, she must deal with her own volatile emotions, the arrival of her estranged sister Claire and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness - or genius - will she inherit?

Teauna Brousseau, a recent graduate in directing from Southern Oregon University, will direct the play. The cast includes Dusty Werst, Jillian Vashro, Justin and Nikki Reed.

Tickets are general admission $5 at the door only. The box office opens at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night. For more information call 862-5371 or check the WTC website, www.whitefishtheatreco.org
