Cross Currents Christian School in Whitefish will celebrate its 25th anniversary Friday by opening a time capsule during morning chapel service.

The public is invited to the commemoration, which begins at 8:50 a.m. in the Whitefish Nazarene Church on Seventh Street, across from the school.

Julie Reimer will lead worship during the half-hour service in the sanctuary, with Mark Pond on guitar and sixth-grader Nathan Knox on drums.

The time capsule, which was put together in 1990 by then-principal Claire Strickler and her Student Council members, will be opened during the service.

Cross Currents Principal Lynda Nelson said instructions still are taped to the lid of the ornate tin box - one foot long, nine inches wide and sealed with duct tape. It directs the school to open the time capsule on Jan. 22, 2005, the 25th anniversary of the school's founding.

To include the whole student body and families, the school's leadership decided that Friday, Jan. 21 was close enough.

Following chapel, everyone is invited back to the school for cake and ice cream. Classes will be dismissed for the afternoon.

To keep the tradition going, each class will contribute something to put back in the time capsule and reseal it for opening at a future date. The sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders who make up the student council will decide on that date.

That night, the public is invited to a 7 p.m. concert by David Walburn at First Baptist Church in honor of the school's 25th anniversary.

Walburn will present "America West," his original multimedia tribute to Lewis and Clark, featuring his music, lyrics and narrative. Just before Walburn's presentation, school officials will deliver a brief history of Cross Currents.

Admission to the concert is $5 for students, $10 for adults, or $25 for a family.

First Baptist Church is on U.S. 93 on the south edge of Whitefish.
