Tilting at the media

The Daily Inter Lake

Tired of entertainment media's trash talk, explicit songs and lurid story lines?

KALS Radio, a Christian station broadcasting from Kalispell, invites Flathead Valley residents to join the FullTilt Media Challenge.

For 30 days beginning on Feb. 1, the radio station is joining a national campaign initiated by counselor, speaker and author Al Menconi. He recommends tuning out secular or negative media and opting for solely Christian entertainment, and he wrote a 30-day devotional book to be used as the campaign's central tool.

Menconi spoke in local churches, The Summit and other venues during a visit to the Flathead last September.

He developed the FullTilt Media Challenge to make people aware of how subtly media can change the public's perception of what is acceptable.

"The classic frog-in-the-kettle illustration applies here," Menconi wrote in a press release. "Many of our moral values are being boiled to death in the kettle of today's entertainment."

Get out of the "kettle" for 30 days, he suggested, then re-evaluate media habits. Menconi thinks people will be surprised at how much negative entertainment they innocently had allowed into their homes.

"The problem isn't with all television, games and music," Menconi continued. "But much of today's entertainment asks us to accept values that most families find unacceptable."

Brad Rauch, station manager for KALS, encourages church leaders and other concerned people to join his listeners in boycotting negative entertainment.

"This campaign emphasizes the individual's stand for personal purity - stepping away from popular culture for a short period of time to clear our heads and understand its effect on us," Rauch said.

A free wristband is available at the radio station for anyone who would like a daily reminder to turn the dial or flip the channel to something positive, and as a way to show support for the cause.

To get the wristband and find out where copies of the 30-day devotional are available, call KALS at 752-5257.

The station, found at 97.1 FM, will air daily devotionals and other resources to help stay focused during the monthlong challenge.
