Swan Ecosystem Center offers winter class series

The Swan Ecosystem Center in Condon is offering an educational series of winter programs.

This year participating educators will also have the opportunity to receive continuing-education credits.

A fee or donation is requested for all programs. Call Swan Ecosystem Center at 754-3137 for more details and to sign up for any of the programs listed below:

Feb. 3, 7 p.m.: Denver Holt, Owl Research Institute, will discuss his research in various parts of the world and in Montana. He will also help participants identify all the owls residing in the Seeley-Swan area with slides and demonstrations of their various calls. 7 p.m.

Feb. 11-12: Larry Evans of the Western Montana Mycological Association will conduct a two-part program on winter ecology for recreationists and landowners. Part one will include an in-depth discussion of the fungi and lichen one can expect to see on the Saturday walk-about. This program will be approximately an hour and a half long, beginning at 7 p.m.

On Feb. 12, beginning at 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. participants will be guided on several short hikes through the various forest habitat types in the valley. Walks will include the Everchanging Forest Trail and should only require regular hiking boots. Fee is $10 per person and $15 per family. Sign up by Feb. 4

Feb. 8 and 15: Steve and Cherie Thompson will offer first aid and CPR. Call for fees and times. Sign up by Feb. 4

Feb. 21-26: 6:30-9:30 p.m., Mike Lake will offer a one-week course in map reading and land navigation. Use of compass and topographical maps will be explained in depth. Fee is $45. Class size is limited. Sign up by Feb. 14.

March 7-11: Mike Lake will offer a one-week course in GPS use. GPS units will be supplied. Step-by-step instruction will walk users through the various functions of basic GPS units. Fee is $10 per person and $15 per family. Call for more information. Sign up by March 1.

March 15, 6:30-9 p.m.: Les Rutledge will teach fly tying. Take home at least three flies ready for next summer. Informative program includes information about fish habitat, habits and fishing technique. Fee is $10 per person or $15 per family. Class size is limited. Sign up by March 7.
