Get funky on the streets of Somers

| July 15, 2005 1:00 AM

The annual Somers Cajun Street Dance is Saturday at 6 p.m. featuring Cajun food, music and dancing.

Headlining the street dance is Lil' Brian and the Zydeco Travelers from Baytown, Texas, near Houston, in the heartland of Southern Cajun funk.

Lil' Brian and the Zydeco Travelers are an innovative and musically accomplished young zydeco band. Their new album, "Funky Nation," is the band's boldest statement yet.

The Creole people of this part of the country, most with strong Louisiana roots, are as serious about zydeco as their neighbors across the border in Louisina. The clubs, festivals and radio there pulse with zydeco rhythms both traditional and new, enjoyed by young and old.

For the past decade, Lil' Brian and The Zydeco Travelers have drawn upon contemporary urban black sounds while remaining respectful and true to their zydeco roots.

Lil' Brian and The Zydeco Travelers have created a modern form of zydeco music that is both rhythmically and lyrically sophisticated - and just plain funky.

Also playing for the dance are Kate Lynch, with alternative folk and rock on guitar, and local favorite Big Daddy and the Blue Notes.

Tickets for the event, an annual fund-raiser for the Somers Volunteer Fire Department, are $15. They are available at the fire department or at Del's Bar in Somers.
