A man died Wednesday afternoon apparently from a fall in Glacier National Park.

"Details are very sketchy at this point," said park spokeswoman Amy Vanderbilt.

The man was near Upper Grinnell Lake in the Many Glacier Valley when the park's dispatch center was called for help for him after he fell an unspecified distance.

CPR was performed and the ALERT helicopter flew from Kalispell Regional Medical Center to pick up the man. He was taken to the hospital but did not survive.

Vanderbilt said she doesn't know the age of the man or where he's from, whether he was accompanied, or whether he was on a trail at the time of the accident. She said it's unknown whether the man suffered some kind of medical event, such as a heart attack, that precipitated the fall.

The cause of the fatality is under investigation by park rangers.
