Flathead County Sheriff

| July 29, 2005 1:00 AM

A woman called the Flathead County Sheriff's Office after a flannel-shirted man kept walking by her house on U.S. 2 in Hungry Horse on Wednesday night. The next time he went by, she was getting her 9-mm handgun and shooting him, she said. A dispatcher warned her that that might be hasty. A deputy found the man, who said he is staying at a nearby motel and likes to take nightly walks.

The Lakeside Quick Response Unit and the Office of Emergency Services were called to Lakeside Boulevard, where someone landed a Jeep on its side, spilling oil into a creek. Someone inside the vehicle suffered minor injuries.

There were numerous complaints about dogs barking through the night. A resident on Nelson Lane in Marion said a neighbor calls her at all hours to complain about her dog barking, but the noisy dog isn't hers. At least the dogs on U.S. 93 had reason to riot: Turkeys were roosting in a tree overhead.

A man and three women made their own racket on Ekalaka Lane, where someone complained that they were yelling profanities. The man was arrested for drug possession.

A 2-year-old boy reported missing in Hungry Horse was found quickly and reunited with his grandfather.

An assault with a weapon was reported on North Riding Road. A man at the Sportsman Bar punched another man in the face. When confronted with a property owner throwing punches and bellowing to "get off my property," a man on Western Drive did.

A property owner called to say a subcontractor, who had walked off the job, showed up at the contractor's house and punctuated his demand for payment by taking a swing at him. The unhappy and unemployed laborer was probably on the way over to confront the property owner next, the owner said. The man was arrested. The confrontation on Fifth Street Southeast was just verbal. That compares to the problem on Conn Road where some people's electricity was about to be disconnected and they were said to be "very verbal."

A boat anchor was stolen on East Oregon Street. A stolen credit card was used to pay for an airline ticket at a travel agency. A house was ransacked and a computer was taken while the owner was away. A purse was stolen from a vehicle on Houston Drive.

It was 3 a.m. before two overdue rafters returned home Thursday, but no strenuous search had yet commenced.
