Helen Louise Hogan, 87, "returned to her Creator through Our Lord Jesus Christ" on March 3, 2005. She passed away at the Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell,

where she had resided for the past seven years.

Helen was born to John and Eleanor (Canham) Dankel on Aug. 17, 1917, in Seattle. She graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle, in 1934, and found employment using her secretarial skills. During World War II she was employed as a secretary on the administrative staff at the United States Naval Air Station at Sandpoint, Wash.

It was there that she met her husband, Robert P. Hogan, personnel officer at the air station. The couple moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1946, following his release from the U.S. Navy. He was employed initially at The Cedar Rapids Gazette daily newspaper and later continued in journalism and public relations before joining the information service at Iowa State University. She continued her secretarial career, including work in Iowa state government at the Iowa Statehouse in Des Moines and later W. Iowa State University.

The couple raised two children, Mark and Ken, and lived in Iowa until 1980, when they retired from the Iowa State University staff and moved to Kingston, Wash. They remained there until 1992 when they moved to Buffalo Hill Terrace in Kalispell.

Helen's family were early settlers in Seattle and she was an active member of the Seattle Pioneer Association. She loved the Puget Sound area and was active in hiking, walking on the beach and hunting for driftwood, bowling and golf as well as civic and charity work. She often used her craft skills to make small items for hospital patients.

Throughout her life she loved her family and loved to be around people. She was always a favorite with her nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother; her sister, Winifred; and her brother, William.

She is survived by her husband Robert of Kalispell; her son Mark and his wife, Jeanne, and their children, Stephanie and Geoffrey, of Kalispell; her son, Kenneth and his wife, Lynn, and their son, Jake, of Boulder, Colo.; her sister, Marion Dankel of Seattle; her brother, Larry Dankel and his wife, Pat, of Edmonds, Wash.; her sister-in-law, Jean Doyle and her husband, Ray, of Seattle; her brother-in-law, Walt Wigger, of Fairbanks, Alaska; and many nieces and nephews.

Private family services are planned. Johnson Mortuary and Crematory is caring for the family.

Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell, the Alzheimer's Association, 919 Michigan Ave., Suite 1000, Chicago, Il 60611, or a charity or church of choice.
