Cardiac 'Cats capture crown

BUTTE - Guy Smith was a ways down the list when Columbia Falls head basketball coach Cary Finberg drew up the options for the final 7.5 seconds of Saturday's Class A state basketball game.

The first plan was to get the ball inside to senior post Anthony Minson.

The second was was a catch-and-go for either senior guard Drew Perry or for Smith.

"Smith just happened to get open and Kevin Boyer made the right decision," Finberg said.

He certainly did.

Smith got the ball at the top of the key, drove two steps, slipped around a Butte Central defender and

laid the ball in with 2.7 seconds to go to lift

Columbia Falls over a quick, physical Butte Central

team, 52-50.

"I was the open man, so they threw it to me," Smith

said. "I saw the rim right in front of me. It was big so I knew (the shot) was going in. When I let it go, I knew it was going in."

That shot got Smith an impromptu ride on the

shoulders of his teammates - and gave the Wildcats their second Class A state championship in three years.

It also sealed what could be a team mantra - "Close games are us."

The Wildcats entered the championship contest 7-1 in games decided by three points or less.

"We've been in close games all year," Smith said afterward. "So we knew what to do."

This one may have been just a little different, though. This was one they had to scratch and scrap for every inch of the way.

"It was a struggle from the start," Finberg said.

For one thing, the Wildcats had to recover from a nearly disastrous first quarter in which they were outrebounded 11-4 and outscored 19-10.

"The bottom line is we weren't competing," Finberg

said of the first period.

It was bad enough his between-quarters message was

"if you guys want to win this game, we've got to rebound the basketball. We have to make a commitment to rebound the basketball.

"We want to get (the ball) and push," he said. "If we

don't rebound, we don't push."

"We were out of it," Smith said. "I personally was really nervous. I've never been in this big of a game before. They wanted it more than we wanted it in the first half."

"Oh, man. That first quarter really killed us." Minson agreed.

"We may have overlooked them a little bit," he admitted. "I think we thought they were underdogs. But we had enough heart … we battled back," he added.

Minson had a rough first quarter himself - he scored

just two points and had to sit for nearly four minutes

after picking up his second personal foul.

The rebounding answer turned out to be 6-foot senior

Jace Ladenburg. Ladenburg grabbed three huge first

half rebounds and scored on an old-fashioned three-

point play as the Wildcats outscored the Maroons 13-6

and gutted their way back within a bucket.

"(Ladenburg) played like he knew how to play," Smith

said. "It was great to have him."

The third quarter started badly as well for Columbia

Falls - a turnover before the half even began followed

by back-to-back three-pointers for the Maroons.

Again, they scrapped back within two points by quarter's end. And again they got off to a bad start in the fourth, going down 41-35 in the opening two

minutes.

It was Minson and Smith to the rescue this time.

Minson scored five of his team-high 16 points and

took two charges. The Wildcats were down two points

when he took the first and the game was tied on the second.

Smith scored six of his eight points - and gave Columbia Falls its first lead of the ballgame with 3:37 to go.

That also gave the Wildcats an opportunity to put on

their full-court press.

"I think that kind of got our kids involved," the coach said.

"I think that was what turned it around for us,"

Smith agreed.

Other leaders were senior guard Perry with 10 points and senior point guard J.D. Fields added eight points, five rebounds and five assists.
