Big Mountain to hold furniture race on Sunday

| March 25, 2005 1:00 AM

Big Mountain Resort holds its 36th annual furniture race at 5 p.m. Sunday to commemorate the end of the winter season.

Participants compete for a variety of prizes by attaching skis to couches and other assorted "furniture." After being towed to the top of a ski trail, participants glide down the hill one at a time.

Racers are judged on their ability to stop as close as possible to a target at the finish area and on the actual furniture piece and costumes used. There are a variety of prizes awarded, including a new recliner.

Registration and entry inspections will take place on Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. near the bottom of the Tenderfoot Lift (Chair 3). Participants must be 21 years of age with a photo ID, sign liability release forms, and have their own helmet.

Each entry must display suitable steering and braking mechanisms in order to pass inspection. All participants must be present at registration and inspection in order to compete in the race. Participants must bring their own tools if modifications are required to entries.

Entry fees are $40 per furniture entry. A $50 deposit is required for all furniture entries and will be refunded after the furniture is removed from the slopes. Competitors will be hauled up Hope Slope between 2 and 4 p.m. and the race will begin promptly at 5 p.m. Awards will be presented on the deck outside of Moguls Village Pub following the event. Electric Mud will perform at the Bierstube starting at 6:30 p.m.
