Rosenbaum rises for Roe

It's been a memorable season, to say the least, for Columbia Falls senior Kyle Rosenbaum.

The talented long and triple jumper has been nursing a tender hamstring, which has limited the two-time state champion's practice time and run approach in meets.

"It's put me way behind," he said.

"It happened the week of spring break. I've been nagging away with it ever since."

Then Friday he suddenly found himself battling a case of the stomach flu, which kept him awake for most of the night.

As a result, he nearly missed the bus for the morning trip Saturday to Legends Stadium for the annual Archie Roe Invitational track meet.

"But I made it," he said.

And good thing.

Rosenbaum set a school record in the triple jump while defending his Archie Roe title with a jump of 46-0.

The three-time Roe champ won this event in 2003 with a distance of 43-5 and last year came out on top, going 43-10.

"Jumping wise, I'm probably 85 percent (right now)," said Rosenbaum.

"It's (hamstring) really tight."

For this meet, Rosenbaum was able to do his full run in the triple jump for only the second time this season. In previous meets, it's been limited to just four steps.

"All right around 45 (feet)," he said of his jumps Saturday.

His best effort came on his second attempt.

In the long jump, however, it was a struggle.

"I was having troubles with my marks," he said.

"I only got two jumps in that (mattered)."

Rosenbaum finished third in that event with a distance of 20-6 1/4. Ty Palmer of Missoula Big Sky won it, 22-0.

"First time I'm doing the long jump on the full approached," he said for this meet.

"It's starting to come around.

"Happy, not satisfied," he said of the triple jump.

"There is still room for improvement."

Rosenbaum came into the Roe with a season best of 43-11 3/4 in the triple.

The invitational record in the event is 46-8 1/2. That belongs to David Schwenk of Missoula Big Sky in 1998.

Team wise, Flathead took both invitational titles.

The Flathead boys totaled 151 1/2 points with Big Sky second, 61 1/4, and Thompson Falls third, 60 1/2.

The FHS girls also cracked the 100-point barrier, finishing with 123. Big Sky was second, 101, and Loyola third, 52.

On the track, the race of the day may have been the girls 800-meter run with Flathead's Zoe Nelson and Bigfork's Brooke Andrus going head-to-head for the second time this season.

And just like the first race, Nelson, a senior, had to hold off a very determined Andrus, a junior, down the stretch while flirting with the meet record (2:16.32).

Nelson won with a time of 2:16.99 while Andrus was second, 2:17.13. An appreciative crowd applauded both girls' efforts.

"She came on in the last 100 (meters) in both of them (races)," said Nelson, pleased to have survived another close call.

"It really motivates me when people are right there."

Nelson said she ran this race no differently than the last time they met. She was hoping, though, to post a time of 2:12.

"I knew she (Andrus) would be there to push me," said Nelson.

"It's been fun to have her here this year. She helps me improve my times, get them down for state."

The last time the two competed, Nelson won in 2:21.03. Andrus in 2:22.08.

"I could tell it was a fast pace (set by Nelson)," said Andrus.

"I wanted to stay in contact with her; stay within (striking) distance. The final 70 yards was a dead sprint. From there (to the finish line), she had a little more than I did in the sprint."

Andrus' Roe time was a "season best, personal best, school record," she said.

"Not too bad. I'm really happy with it."

Andrus came into Roe with a state leading time of 2:19.6. Nelson was next at 2:20.1.

Nelson also won the 1,600 (5:16.75) and ran a leg on Flathead's winning 1,600 relay.

The other double winners for the girls were Ashley Ferda of Whitefish, 100 (15.81) and 300 (47.36) hurdles, and Amber Aikins of Cut Bank, long jump (16-7) and triple jump (36-1 1/2).

Flathead's other individual winner on the day was Cricket Johnston in the 100 (12.8). She also ran on both winning Flathead relays.

Also on the relays were (400) Sarah Griffith, Jenae Lister and Elizabeth Myers; (1,600) Lister and Shannon Ross.

Columbia Falls' Bekah Stoltz was a repeat winner in the discus (137-2) while Polson's Danielle Rowe won the high jump (5-2).

The meet's lone triple winner was Flathead's Ryan Ross. He won the 100 (11.35), 110 (15.32) and 300 (39.9) hurdles.

Thompson Falls' Ryan Dorrian doubled up with firsts in the 200 (22.8) and 400 (50.61) and Eureka's Dane Steward dominated the distance events, winning the 1,600 (4:32.66) and 3,200 (9:44.0).

Ross also ran on Flathead's winning 400 relay along with Jareth Wilson, Beau Watkins and Scott Cassel.

Other firsts for Flathead were turned in by Brandon Hoffenbacker, shot put (48-9 1/2), and Sean Clark, 800 (1:58.43).

Whitefish's Chris Hicks won the high jump (6-4).

Two records were set, both in the javelin.

Nate Bach of Thompson Falls won the boys event, 206-4, and Marrissa Tschida of Loyola the girls, 141-6.
