Park: Logan Pass opening still a 'go' for today

Glacier National Park officials predicted Saturday evening that the Going-to-the-Sun Road would be fully open to traffic by midday today. That prediction, however, is still highly dependent on local weather conditions.

"We'll assess the situation again tomorrow morning," park spokeswoman Amy Vanderbilt said Saturday. "Our plowing crews will have to drive the road from end to end Sunday morning to clean up any debris and to complete required road maintenance. Then the rangers will assess any safety issues."

Assuming the road does go online today, this will be one of the earliest openings on record - the winner being May 16, 1987.

Though Vanderbilt said there had not been a substantial accumulation of snow on the road in the past day, the U.S. Weather Service has predicted a chance of rain showers today and a slight chance of rain and snow showers toward evening.

If you're looking at being one of the first to head over the pass this year, be sure and call park headquarters at 888-7800 before you get in the car.
