The state is currently accepting lease proposals for a possible 2-acre hotel complex on Kalispell's northwest side, in the Section 36 school trust parcel.
Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation officials would not say whether the move comes in response to a specific request.
However, the agency, which is responsible for managing the school trust lands, typically doesn't advertise for proposals until it gets an attractive offer.
The agency also receives inquiries on a regular basis regarding development possibilities on the Section 36 parcel, which is located near one of the busiest intersections in the valley, in what is quickly becoming the most concentrated retail corridor in Northwest Montana.
The two acres in question
would be located west of Lowe's Home Improvement, between the Bonneville power line easement and the future U.S. 93 bypass.
The information packet associated with the request for proposals indicates that preference will be given to a nationally franchised hotel. At least a third of the rooms must be suites, and the project must be completed within 18 months of signing the lease.
Other "desirable amenities" include an interior pool, restaurant or conference facility.
The deadline for submitting proposals is June 24. DNRC officials expect to make a decision by the end of July.
The information packet also suggests that more lease proposals will be forthcoming "to attract and co-locate additional retail and general commercial uses" is that northeast corner of Section 36.
This is the second potential hotel development in Kalispell to be announced in recent weeks. A 120-room hotel is also reportedly part of the Hutton Ranch Plaza proposal, which would include a 14-screen movie theater, restaurants and retail stores on 46 acres located between Flathead Valley Community College and the Target/Home Depot retail complex.
