Deadline extended for trail committee
Whitefishs Trail Runs Through It steering committee has extended the deadline to Nov. 14 for community members interested in volunteering for the committee.
The committee, made up of representatives from the city of Whitefish and Flathead Gateway Partners, met for the first time on Oct. 27 and decided the extension was necessary due to strong community interest.
The group is being formed as part of a public-private partnership to help plan and design a recreational trail system that will generally loop around Whitefish Lake, traversing state, federal, and private lands.
The trail project grew out of the plan developed by the community and state land managers for 13,000 acres of public land surrounding Whitefish.
Candidates may include recreationists, existing trust-land leaseholders, landowners along the route of the proposed trail, representatives of neighborhood or area associations, local government officials, state and/or federal wildlife and habitat managers, the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, or the public at large.
Applicants should have some familiarity with trail planning and design and be willing and able to attend regular meetings for approximately six to nine months.
