Douglas Edward Barnes, 63

Douglas Edward Barnes, 63, of Helena, died Friday morning, Nov. 4, 2005, at St. Peters Hospital in Helena.

Doug was born in Whitefish on March 13, 1942, to Lorin D. and Janice (Smith) Barnes. He received his education, graduating from Whitefish High School. He continued his education, receiving a bachelor of art degree in special education from the University of Montana at Missoula. Doug and Susan Jeffery were married in Lewistown on Aug. 31, 1984.

Dougs career covered various positions with the state of Montana, ending with his retirement from the Department of Corrections in 2003. In his retirement years, he worked part-time with the Helena Industries.

He loved music, family, camping, fishing and working in the yard. Doug was a member and director of various bands throughout the Flathead Valley, central Montana and the Helena area.

Doug was preceded in death by his father, Lorin Barnes.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, of Helena; sons, Erik Barnes of Boulder, and Jeffery Barnes of Helena; daughters, Ayrne Meyer and her husband, Holger, of Helena, and Somer Griffith and her fianc, Chet Williams, of Helena; one grandchild, Enrya Meyer; brother, Dennis Barnes of Bremerton, Wash.; and his mother, Jane Barnes, of Columbia Falls.

A memorial service in celebration of Dougs life will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at the Retz Funeral Home Chapel. Interment of his cremated remains will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, at Glacier Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Kalispell.
