An Evergreen man was arrested Monday for attempted deliberate homicide for allegedly trying to kill his girlfriend.

Christopher Dyer, 51, is under guard at Kalispell Regional Medical Center where he was taken after he reportedly tried to overdose.

The Sheriff's Office was notified at about 6 a.m. that a woman at North Valley Hospital had been badly beaten and strangled with a bathrobe belt. Officers confirmed that the woman is in serious condition.

The woman said she had told Dyer to leave her house and that he attacked her and said he was going to kill her, according to a sheriff's report.

Dyer was found later at his own house, where he had reportedly tried to kill himself with an overdose of medication. He was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Attempted homicide charges have not often been filed in domestic-abuse or partner-abuse cases in Flathead County, but Patrol Commander Pete Wingert said this assault was "especially heinous."

The woman suffered serious choking injuries, he said.

Sheriff Jim Dupont said she was severely beaten.
