COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - Flathead stepped out of league, and state play, Saturday with a double volleyball outing.
Flathead defeated Coeur d'Alene 25-19, 32-30, 20-25, 25-18. In the second match, St. Maries, Idaho, downed Flathead 25-20, 25-23, 25-20.
"Great competition for us," said FHS coach Christy Harkins.
"We didn't know anything about the teams going in. It was good to go into a match and adapt as we were playing."
The outing with Coeur d'Alene featured a wild 32-30 second game.
"Never been to 32 before," said Harkins.
"Most of the time, play a cap to 30.
"We didn't have anymore subs, no more time outs," added Harkins.
"You leave the kids on the floor and let them battle it out."
Harkins called St. Maries a very talented team.
"They run a real quick offense, a fast-paced game the entire time," she said.
"They didn't make many mistakes."
Flathead, 11-4 overall, was missing middle hitter Kristina Ylinen.
"Shaina Evans, a sophomore, did a great job filling in," said Harkins.
Flathead's next action is the Missoula Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
