The next new retail store in Spring Prairie Center could be a Kohl's department store.

The next new retail store in Spring Prairie Center could be a Kohl's department store.

Negotiations are under way between Kohl's Corporation and Goldberg Properties Inc., developer of Spring Prairie Center on U.S. 93 North.

"We won't have any definitive word on the outcome of that for probably a month," said Grant Nelson, vice president of Goldberg.

Kohl's describes itself as "a family oriented, specialty department store focused on middle-income families and led by highly recognized national brands."

Other sources have categorized the Wisconsin-based retailer as "discount shopping with a brand-name twist." It is one of the fastest-growing companies in the nation.

"The Kohl's real estate committee will meet in mid-November and they'll make their decision at that time," Nelson said. "Our company has done a number of deals with Kohl's in the past.

"If they did come, they would take part of the final phase at Spring Prairie Center. We are negotiating now with a number of other retailers who are kind of all waiting to see if Kohl's commits."

The smaller retailers - what Nelson called "junior anchors" - would be midsize stores of 15,000 to 25,000 square feet.

Current tenants of Spring Prairie Center are Lowe's and Costco, and Wells Fargo Bank recently began building a new bank at the center.
