Jean Carolyn Hogmart Lowney, 76
Mrs. Jean Carolyn Hogmart Lowney, 76, of Hartwell, Ga., died Saturday, April 1, 2006, from terminal cancer at her home.
Born on Feb. 14, 1930, in High Bridge, N.J., she was one of four daughters born to Eugene and Olga Hogmark.
She became a registered nurse, and it was during her training that she met Dan Lowney, a brother of one of her nursing companions. Jean and her late husband, Dan, were both avid hunters and fishermen, and in 1962 they opened Dan's Sport Shop in Clinton, N.J. During the 20-plus years they personally operated their small family business, they developed lifelong friendships with many of their loyal customers.
In 1979 they sold the family business, retired and relocated to Hartwell, where they both enjoyed a hobby farm, and established another network of close friends with similar interest in the Hartwell area. They both were members of the Hart County Cattlemen's Association.
On July 4, 2004, Dan Lowney was killed in a farming accident. The loss of her lifelong best friend and husband was Jean's hardest burden, and she accepted her terminal cancer without resistance.
Surviving family members wish to extend their deepest gratitude to the Vista Care Hospice program, which allowed Jean to spend her final days at home without pain with her children and local friends.
Survivors include her four children; a son, Michael D. Lowney, and spouse, Tammy, of Dewy Rose, Ga.; three daughters, Carolyn B. Osburn and spouse, Dennis, of Kalispell, Wendy S. Arace and spouse, Mick, of Londenderry, Vt., and Cindy J. Broadwell and spouse, Gene, of Bowersville, Ga.; two sisters, Marian Long of Clearwater Beach, Fla., and Eleanor B. Fretz of Hilltown Township, Bucks County, Pa.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her Swedish parents; her husband; and her sister, Doris Hogmark.
The body will be cremated and the family plans no memorial services in accordance with her wishes. All who knew Jean can toast her memory with a private ceremony.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Hart County Cattlemen's Association or VFW in Glen Gardner, N.J.
Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell was in charge of all arrangements.
