Kalispell police
arrested a man Tuesday after he allegedly stole a puppy from the animal shelter and wound up running over it with his car. Daniel Staggs, 18, is charged with taking a black Labrador from the shelter and fleeing in a black Ford Probe. Animal Warden Paul Charbanneau reportedly saw the vehicle and followed it through town. On Meridian Road, Staggs reportedly opened his car door and threw out the puppy. According to a police report, the dog lost its footing when it landed or ran beneath the car and was killed. Sgt. Wade Rademacher said Staggs is charged with theft.
"We don't believe he tried to run over the puppy," Rademacher said, so no charges in connection with that were immediately filed. Staggs also is suspected of accountability to theft in connection to a purse that was stolen from the Aero Inn last week. He is listed as a transient.
