Both athletes win three track events in 9-team meet

Troy's Elisha Kampfe and Libby's Kyle Baker were triple winners on Tuesday at a non-scoring track meet at Legends Stadium.

Kampfe doubled up with firsts in the jumps - triple (32-6 1/2) and long (16-2 1/2) - and also won the 100 (13.36).

Baker topped the javelin (177-11) and shot put (50-9) and added another first by winning the high jump (6-4).

Nine schools competed in the event, which lasted nearly five hours.

"It's a competitive meet, but we just don't score it," said Flathead boys coach Dan Hodge.

"It was a good balanced meet, good competition for everyone involved."

The Flathead boys won seven events - two relays and had five individual winners in Carl Nystuen, 3,200 (10:06.63); Sean Clark, 800 (2:01.62); Beau Gravelle, 400 (54.11); Seth Grossman, 1,600 (4:42.29) and Dan Ogden, discus (154-1).

"The 4x400 relay team is steadily improving," said Hodge.

"They have improved 14 seconds from the first time trial. That's encouraging. The kids are working better and having fun."

On that relay for Flathead, timed in 3:31.48, were Gravelle, Clark, John Fairweather and Reed Watkins.

Whitefish's Chris Hicks opened the season by posting a personal best in the triple jump (45-2 1/2). He also won the long jump (20-5 1/2).

Cort Rogers of Whitefish was one of three pole vaulters to clear 13-0. He won on fewer misses.

Flathead's Jason Russell, in just his second spring competing in the discus, had a dandy throw of 146-0, which earned him second place.

Back to the girls, the Bravettes also had seven firsts - two relays and five individuals: Briana Ori, 800 (2:36.79), Liz Myers, 300 hurdles (48.24); Elysia Andrews, 1,600 (5:57.43); Kendalyn Hable, 200 (27.40); and Tabby Spencer, javelin (125-8).

"Within four to six inches of her personal best," said Flathead girls coach Jerry Boschee of Spencer.

"All her throws were over 120 feet."

Boschee says he has high expectations for his distance crew - Andrews, Tera Klein, Kelly Niebaum and Ori.

"Those four kids need to carry us," he said.

"They're coming along, but it's pretty slow. I look for them to step up in the next meets."

Bigfork's Brooke Andrus turned in top times in the 3,200 (11:26.16) and 400 (1:02.06).
