Flathead wins weather-shortened track meet
The Daily Inter Lake
MISSOULA - They almost got it all in.
The Missoula Invitational finally gave way to a chilly and wet finish Saturday as the girls meet ended with 13 of 17 events completed and the boys did a little better, finishing 15.
"It got nasty," said Flathead girls coach Jerry Boschee at the end.
"It was pretty bad."
So bad that meet officials temporarily halted the competition for 30 minutes to see if the weather conditions might improve.
"It dropped 10 to 15 degrees," said FHS boys coach Dan Hodge during that break.
"When it poured at the end, it was the wrong kind of weather to end (a track meet) with."
The four events not held for the girls were the 400, 300 hurdles, 3,200 and 1,600 relay. The two for the boys - 300 hurdles and 1,600 relay.
"It was cold, windy, one of those days you just wanna survive and then get outta there," said Boschee.
"We have a couple of little owies, strained and pulled hamstrings that we will be nursing this week."
Despite the conditions, two meet records were set.
Bigfork' Brooke Andrus, the defending Class A state champ in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, won the 800 with a meet record time of 2:16.9. That bettered the old mark of 2:17.65 set by Polson's Kasey Harwood in 2003.
Nate Bache of Thompson Falls, with a throw of 205-8, shattered the old javelin mark of 189-9 held by Chris Drowatzky of Missoula Big Sky. That was set in 2003.
Flathead did leave the meet, however, with two team titles and several individual winners.
The Bravettes' Liz Myers was named the Class AA athlete of the meet by virtue of her first place in the 100, running on the winning 400 relay team and posting a lifetime best in the triple jump (35-1/2) to finish third.
"She had a great day," said Boschee.
On the relay with Myers were Sarah Griffith, Kendalyn Habel and Jenae Lister.
"Ran a 50.6," said Boschee of the relay.
"A PB (personal best) by almost a second."
Flathead's other highlight on a miserable day for track was turned in by Tabitha Spencer in the javelin. She finished second, 13-19.
"She threw a lifetime best," said Boschee.
"She had the best throw going into the finals, lost it on the final throw."
That was turned in by Marissa Tschida, Loyola, who uncorked a throw of 137-5.
The Flathead boys had four firsts and just creeped over the century mark in scoring with 102 points.
Dan Ogden won the shot put (49-10 1/2), Sean Clark won the 800 (2:00.20) and John Fairweather the 1,600 (4:31.50).
The other first was turned in by the 400 relay team (44.4) of Jareth Wilson, Beau Watkins, Sam Tedrow, Scott Cassel.
"We got through the day," said Hodge.
"I don't know of anybody who got hurt."
Hodge said Clark and Fairweather both ran well.
"I had some younger kids who had personal bests," he said. "Thats what you're after. It happened to a lot of them."
Whitefish's Chris Hicks was the lone double winner in individual events, taking firsts in the high jump (6-2) and triple jump (46-5). He finished second in the long jump (20-10 1/2). Christian segota of Hellgate won that event with a distance of 21-0.
Polson had two individual winners in high jumper Danielle Rowe (5-0) and 110 hurdler Andy Nelson (16.00).
The Whitefish boys finished fourth, 41 points, while the WHS girls were fifth with 34.
