A western meadowlark belts out its bubbling song from a fencepost along the Batavia Waterfowl Production Area west of Kalispell. When asked in 1930 which bird best represented Montana, the state's schoolchildren responded overwhelmingly with the meadowlark. Legislators agreed during the next session, and in 1931 the western meadowlark became an official representative of Big Sky Country. Information from montanakids.com
