Flathead bounces back in track outing

It may have been a non-scoring track outing Tuesday for Flathead, Whitefish, Bigfork, Browning and Cut Bank at Legends Stadium, but several athletes did score some big points with the FHS coaching staff.

"This meet showed us what the kids are capable of - better times and distances than they produced in Butte (last Saturday)," said FHS boys coach Dan Hodge.

"That encouraging. We still have 3 1/2 weeks before divisional so there's room for improvement."

One of those athletes was Flathead's Dan Ogden. After failing to place in the shot put at Butte, had the best throw Tuesday - 50-4 1/4.

Ogden also won the discus, 155-7.

Jerry Boschee said his Flathead girls made positive strides in the throws and jumps.

"That has been a question mark for us," he said.

"Tabitha Spencer has been consistent (in the javelin), but now we have a slew of kids whare are throwing 100 feet."

Spencer had the best throw in this outing, 127-0, while Breckal Jahner was next at 107, which was a personal best. Libby Cartwright was fourth, 101-1.

Becky Johnson won the shot put, 32-5, and discus, 116-2.

In the triple jump Sam Gunlikson's 33-7 1/2 leap was a personal best by a foot.

"Last Saturday was kinda a wakeup call," said Boschee of his team's effort in Great Falls.

"We're gaining confidence at the right time."

Flathead hosts Missoula Hellgate and Sentinel on Thursday, 3 p.m.
