FHS dominates triangular meet

The last time Flathead's Dan Ogden and Missoula Hellgate's Andrew Woods went head -to-head in the discus, Ogden prevailed on a late throw with a distance of 160-4.

That was last Saturday at the Swede Dahlberg Invitational in Butte.

Woods was second at 158-3.

"I was just really feeling it that day," said Ogden of being ready to compete.

"I was pumped up for it. It was a big AA meet."

Fast forward to Thursday. Those two throwers were back in the ring competing at Legends Stadium. This time, however, it was just a triangular meet and Woods came out on top.

Woods, on his first attempt, unleashed a throw of 164-10. That proved to be more than enough as the best Ogden could do was 147-6 in placing second.

"I didn't prepare for it as much today," said Ogden.

"I wasn't expecting him to pull out a 160-something on his first one. He's a good thrower."

Woods currently has the best AA throw in the state at 165-0 with Ogden third.

"Discus right now," said Ogden of what his best weight event is.

"I'm ranked higher in the state (in that event)."

Ogden did salvage the day by winning the shot put with a career best effort of 51-8 1/2. On Tuesday in another non-scoring meet with four different schools, he won the shot put with a distance of 50-4 1/4.

Those two efforts made up for not placing at the Dahlberg meet.

"I've been putting a lot more time in (the shot put) since Butte," he said.

"Not focusing so much on the discus."

Ogden had one of 11 firsts on the day for the FHS boys. The Braves also finished second in 13 of the 17 events and went 1-2-3 in five events - 110 hurdles, javelin, shot put, 300 hurdles and 800.

The Flathead girls were just as dominating, winning 11 events and placing second nine times.

Liz Myers won the 100 (17.12) and 200 (26.82).
