James Albert Dolan, 87, a retired project manager for the state of Montana Highway Department, passed away Monday, July 31, 2006, at the Marias Medical Center due to natural causes.
Funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at St. William Catholic Church, with military honors afterward. Whitted Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his daughters, Vicki and Wally Rye of Columbia Falls, and Debra and Gregg Schnee of Shelby; sister, Mildred Ruebush, of Grand Forks, N.D.; four grandchildren, Neil Rye and Jason Rye, both of Kalispell, Cody Schnee of Dillon, and Brittany Schnee of Paso Robles, Calif.; and one great-granddaughter, Emliy Rye.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hazel; siblings, Frank, Charles, Edward, Elsie, Gladys and Bertha.
Jim was born May 9, 1919, at Waltham, Mont., to George and Sara (Zamanik) Dolan and grew up in Tracy, Mont. He graduated from Centerville High School in 1937.
Jim served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was helping build the airstrip on Wake Island before his capture by the Japanese. He served 44 months as a prisoner of war and was discharged Oct. 1, 1945.
Jim married Hazel Mary Emswiler on June 18, 1950, at Lewistown. He worked 31 years for the state of Montana Highway Department, retiring in 1981 as a project manager.
He was a member of St. William Catholic Church and the Workers of Wake, Cavite and Guam World War II POWs. He enjoyed hunting, fly fishing, woodworking, and most of all his family.
